Fundraising to Save the Cabinet

The campaign successfully raised funds to help resist the planning appeal. Now it needs to raise money to fight back against new planning applications. The owner of The Cabinet is an experienced property developer with assets and ready access to expensive lawyers and planning experts. The Save the Cabinet Action Group is a small community group that depends on the goodwill of supporters to raise money for the expert help we needed to stand any chance of matching the developer’s resources. The developer’s appeal took the form of a Public Inquiry - a formal process similar to a court case - involving lawyers and experts, as well as witnesses. Paying for lawyers and experts was expensive. This is why we launched the Save the Cabinet Fighting Fund. The community response was fantastic. Through a combination of direct donations, fundraising events such as pop-up pub nights, golf days and use of an online “JustGiving” page we raised some £24,000. This is a seriously astonishing response which demonstrates the strength of feeling among the community in support of the campaign to save The Cabinet, and the Action Group would like to thank everyone who has helped. This was needed to cover, among other things: Representation by a barrister at the appeal A planning expert A surveyor to provide expert evidence on viability These do not come cheaply, but the Action Group chose its representatives and experts with great care so as to ensure the right balance between value for money and the quality of expertise we need. Following the close of the Inquiry we have paid all our bills. A summary of the accounts is here. Now that a new listed building consent application has been submitted we judged that we needed to bring in professional help again. And although we consider that this represents excellent value for money it nonetheless has to be paid for. Our JustGiving page raised nearly £2,000, which is a fantastic result, but has now been retired. You can donate by cheque payable to the Save the Cabinet Action Group, or by BACS (please email us for details). Or you can donate at one of our events such as a Pop-up Pub night.
